Dobong-gu Opens New Smart City Chapter... AI Underpass Safety Passage Service Draws Attention

Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eon-seok) is introducing the nation's first artificial intelligence (AI) underpass safety passage service.

The district announced that it has applied an AI underpass safety passage system to three underpasses near Banghak Station and will provide state-of-the-art passage convenience services starting this month.

The system integrates LiDAR and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. This technology detects the height of vehicles entering the underpass and informs in real-time whether the vehicle can pass, while visually providing the situation on the opposite side of the underpass to assist the passage of vehicles and pedestrians.

The installed and applied locations are one underpass near Banghak Station with a height of 1.8m (Banghak-dong 726-184) and two underpasses with a height of 2m (Dobong-dong 637-117, Banghak-dong 726-194).

This area accounts for only 0.3% of the entire residential area of Dobong-gu, but the traffic accident rate in 2023 is 5.5 times higher, raising ongoing concerns about its risk.

Previously, to address this issue, the district applied the AI underpass safety passage system to the ‘Smart City Innovation Technology Discovery Project’ led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The system was completed in June last year, followed by about six months of pilot operation to verify its safety.

The passage information acquired through the system will be stored in the Dobong-gu urban data aggregation platform and utilized for accident safety management and other purposes.

Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “We have implemented the nation’s first safety passage service using LiDAR and AI technology. Going forward, we will expand this technology to urban safety network construction projects to create an environment where residents can live safely.”
