First Step of the New Year with Staff After the Opening Ceremony: Site Visit to 'Gyeongbu Line Railroad Undergrounding and Yeongdeungpo Rotary Overpass Demolition'... Visiting Key Project Sites Leading Yeongdeungpo's Great Transformation to Strengthen Firm Determination for Change and Leap
2025 Will Be a Year to Successfully Lead Core Projects of the 8th Elected Term and Lay the Foundation for the Next 100 Years
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it held the ‘2025 New Year Ceremony’ along with site visits to the ‘Gyeongbu Line Railroad Underground Project and Yeongdeungpo Rotary Overpass Demolition,’ reaffirming a strong commitment to the great transformation of Yeongdeungpo.
The district held the 2025 New Year Ceremony at 10 a.m. on the 2nd in the annex auditorium of the district office. The ceremony began with awards for exemplary public officials and departments selected for administrative excellence, followed by Mayor Choi Ho-kwon’s New Year address and a video featuring employees’ wishes for the new year.
On this day, Mayor Choi Ho-kwon expressed his determination to successfully carry out key projects such as the Gyeongbu Line railroad undergrounding, the demolition of the Yeongdeungpo Rotary overpass, and the redevelopment of the Yeongdeungpo Station shantytown, transforming Yeongdeungpo into a premium residential area and a new economic hub in the southwest region.
After the ceremony at the district office, the district continued the event with site visits to the ‘Gyeongbu Line Railroad Underground Project’ and the ‘Yeongdeungpo Rotary Overpass Demolition’ as the first major schedule of the year. Breaking away from the traditional ceremonial routine held annually, the district strengthened on-site administration by visiting key project sites that will signal the great transformation of Yeongdeungpo and reaffirmed its commitment to the successful implementation of these projects.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District (right), toured the area around the Gyeongbu Line railway from the rooftop of Yeongdeungpo Station building.
First, Mayor Choi Ho-kwon toured the Gyeongbu Line railroad area from the rooftop of Yeongdeungpo Station, explaining that the undergrounding of the Gyeongbu Line railroad is a great opportunity for the long-divided Yeongdeungpo to finally unite as one and become a new growth axis.
He expressed his ambition to create a ‘compact city’ in the space freed by removing the railroad tracks, featuring large-scale green spaces, startup spaces for young people, and the attraction of advanced knowledge industries, allowing residents to enjoy jobs, housing, and leisure all at once.
Especially with the first phase of the integrated development pilot project for railroad undergrounding scheduled to be announced early this year, the district plans to actively convey residents’ opinions to the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to ensure the prompt advancement of the Gyeongbu Line railroad undergrounding.
Next, Mayor Choi Ho-kwon moved to the site of the ‘Yeongdeungpo Rotary Overpass Demolition’ to check the progress. The ‘Yeongdeungpo Rotary Overpass,’ whose demolition began in October last year, has been in place for over 50 years, becoming old and dangerous, and notorious as the top area for frequent traffic accidents.
Mayor Choi Ho-kwon stated, "This project is a long-standing wish that can no longer be delayed for the safety of residents, prevention of traffic accidents, and the development of Yeongdeungpo. We will devote our efforts to minimizing inconvenience to residents."
