The Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment conducted a soil contamination survey from April to December last year, targeting 299 sites in industrial complexes and factory areas suspected of soil pollution. The results confirmed that 98.9% of the soil was safe and within the standard limits.
There were a total of three sites that exceeded the soil contamination concern standards. At one site related to waste disposal and recycling in Goyang-si, zinc was detected at 652.1 mg/kg, exceeding the standard limit of 600 mg/kg. Additionally, petroleum-based total hydrocarbons (TPH) exceeded the standard limit of 2,000 mg/kg at two sites: 5,487 mg/kg at one site in an industrial complex and factory area in Yangju-si, and 2,218 mg/kg at one traffic-related facility site in Guri-si.

The Institute of Health and Environment notified the respective city and county offices of the soil contamination survey results. Each city and county plans to conduct detailed investigations of the exceeded sites and take administrative measures such as ordering soil purification and restoration.
Detailed results of the soil contamination survey will be verified by the National Institute of Environmental Research and then disclosed on the Soil and Groundwater Information System (sgis.nier.go.kr) operated by the Ministry of Environment.
A representative of the Institute of Health and Environment stated, "We will do our best to create a pleasant and safe living environment by continuously monitoring soil contaminants through annual surveys and purifying and restoring contaminated soil."
