District Chief Lee Seongheon Greets Employees at District Office Entrance, Replacing New Year's Ceremony
Seodaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Seong-heon) held a sharing event in the lobby of the government building on the morning of January 2, the first working day of the new year, as part of an informal opening ceremony where employees voluntarily participated on their way to work.
Employees donated items they brought such as ramen, canned food, instant rice, kitchenware, and bath products, and the district provided souvenirs to the first 100 participants. The collected items will be delivered to vulnerable residents through the Seodaemun Food Bank and other channels.
Mayor Lee Seong-heon also participated in the donation and greeted employees individually as they arrived at work, replacing the traditional opening ceremony. The executive meeting held in the mayor’s office continued with reflections on the new year and resolutions. At this meeting, Mayor Lee shared the vision for the district’s administration with the executive staff.

The mayor stated, “In the new year, Seodaemun-gu will undergo definite changes to turn the dreams of our residents into reality,” emphasizing, “We will complete a central Seoul city that residents are proud of, with a pleasant residential environment and convenient transportation system.”
He mentioned, “We will thoroughly prepare for the Gyeongui Line underground project, a leading railway integration development project, and link the three-dimensional complex development on Seongsan-ro in front of Yonsei University with the development of idle railway land to concretize the blueprint of the new Daehak-ro, including youth start-up hubs, medical specialization hubs, and cultural spaces.”
He added, “We will nurture hope through learning and become an educational and cultural city enriched with daily culture,” and said, “We will expand the Seodaemun Happiness Campus program utilizing the excellent educational resources of nine universities in the district and activate cooperative projects between universities and the local community, such as science and humanities concerts and regional-university joint living labs.”
To expand ecological rest areas in the urban center and establish a safe living environment, he stated, “We will carefully cultivate healing spots visited by people worldwide, such as Hongje Waterfall, Cafe Waterfall, Ansan Mountain, and the natural loess trails, improve the water quality and aesthetics of Hongjecheon and Bulgwangcheon streams, and transform the archive next to Cafe Waterfall into a K-culture tourist attraction, thereby definitely upgrading the Hongje Waterfall area as a cultural tourism hub of Seodaemun.”
Mayor Lee Seong-heon urged the executive staff, “As a result of our district’s steady preparation with a broad vision for the future, favorable conditions for regional revitalization such as the Gyeongui Line undergrounding and the lifting of the Yonsei-ro public transportation-only zone are converging,” and added, “Let us make the most of these policy conditions to accelerate the revitalization of the Sinchon and Ewha commercial districts.”
