On the morning of the 2nd, Daejeon City held a New Year's kick-off ceremony at the city hall's main auditorium, reaffirming its commitment to completing the vision of Daejeon as a world-class economic city in the new year.
In his New Year's address, Mayor Lee Jangwoo stated, "In 2025, together with our citizens, we will stand at the center of Korea and pioneer a grand future," adding, "Daejeon is the only city with the potential and capacity to surpass Seoul and the greater metropolitan area."
He went on to highlight that Daejeon ranked second nationwide in economic growth rate and third in per capita income in 2023, saying, "As the head of an institution representing Daejeon, I feel a tremendous sense of responsibility and a calling of the times." He emphasized, "Through bold and innovative challenges, we will expand the Pangyo Line and Giheung Line into the Daejeon Line by 2030, completing Daejeon as a world-class city that surpasses the metropolitan area."
He further urged, "No matter the circumstances, act proactively and pioneer your own future with the spirit of 'Suchojakju' (the principle of being the master wherever you are), and devote your utmost efforts to making Daejeon the scientific capital and a world-class economic city of Korea."
Before the ceremony, Mayor Lee began the official New Year's schedule by paying tribute at Bohun Park and the National Daejeon Memorial Park together with senior officials.
