Establishing a Design Cluster Connecting Past and Future Values

Earlier, Uijeongbu City established a plan to preserve the existing buildings of Camp Red Cloud (CRC) in July last year and held briefings in July and August to gather opinions from the city council, experts, and citizens.

Based on this, in November, the city submitted a draft list of buildings to be preserved to the Ministry of National Defense, and through consultations, it was decided to finally preserve 16 buildings located in non-contaminated areas, excluding those buildings where soil remediation is restricted.

The preserved buildings consist of historically and culturally valuable facilities such as the commander's office, chapel, bunker, and education center. This was made possible by the city’s policy to utilize existing buildings combined with the active cooperation of the Ministry of National Defense.

According to the ‘Special Act on the Support for Areas Surrounding U.S. Military Bases in Korea,’ the Ministry of National Defense plans to demolish buildings from the second half of this year to remove soil contamination from the returned land. Prior to this, the city will conduct subsurface contamination investigations on the buildings intended for preservation to finalize their preservation status.

An Jong-seong, Director of Urban Design, said, “Camp Red Cloud is a symbolic place of the Korea-U.S. security alliance born out of the Korean War and a space that holds modern and contemporary history. We will create it as a design cluster that connects the values of the past and the future and return it to the citizens.”
