The city of Gwangju announced on the 2nd that it will open the newly expanded 'Gwangsan-gil', connecting the Asia Culture Center (ACC) and the Chonnam National University Hospital Five-way Intersection, on the 3rd. The road has been expanded from a two-lane one-way street to a five-lane two-way street.

Gwangsan-gil, the main access road to the ACC, has been expanded from two to five lanes, with sidewalks 3 to 4 meters wide constructed on both sides of the road.

The city expects that the expansion will alleviate chronic traffic congestion around the ACC and contribute to revitalizing the surrounding areas, such as Printing Street.

In particular, as the city pursues a transformation into a 'Daejabo (public transportation, bicycle, and pedestrian-oriented) city', experts in architecture, spatial planning, and landscaping participated in the Gwangsan-gil project. The roadway was paved with block materials, and the curbs between the road and sidewalks were adjusted to a sloped design, making it a pedestrian-friendly road.

Gwangju plans to operate Gwangsan-gil as a regular five-lane two-way road (two lanes toward ACC, three lanes toward Chonnam National University Hospital) and, during weekends or local festivals, to convert it into a 'car-free pedestrian road', enabling various social experiments in line with the 'Daejabo city' concept.

Kim Junyoung, Director of Urban Space, said, "Gwangsan-gil will be established as one of Gwangju's representative walkable streets, connecting nearby Purungil Park, Dongmyeong-dong, Yangnim-dong, and Gwangju Park Bitpocha Street. As it transforms into a popular destination for pedestrians, it will greatly contribute to revitalizing the area around the ACC."
