Free Parking in the Heart of Seoul... New Public Parking Lot Opens in Parking Hell Yongridan-gil The Korea Electric Power Corporation Samgakji Substation development site (left in the photo) has been transformed into a public parking lot with 234 spaces (right in the photo) after five months of construction. Yongridan-gil, which stretches from Samgakji Station on Subway Lines 4 and 6 to the area near the Amorepacific headquarters building, is a popular spot among the MZ generation, but it has suffered from a severe shortage of parking spaces, leading to disputes and conflicts caused by illegal parking and issues with pedestrian safety.

To solve this problem, Yongsan-gu created a parking lot here last year and held a completion ceremony for the “Samgakji Temporary Public Parking Lot” on January 31, starting operation this month. The Samgakji public parking lot is a flat parking lot with an area of 8,626㎡ and 234 parking spaces. It includes 169 public parking spaces and 65 resident-priority parking spaces. Within the site, 23 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and a thermal imaging camera for fire prevention in the electric vehicle charging area were also installed.

The Samgakji public parking lot can be used free of charge during the pilot operation period this month. From February, a parking fee of 250 KRW per 5 minutes will be charged.

Yongsan-gu has been searching for land to solve the parking space shortage in this area and persuaded the landowner, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), to build a public parking lot on the KEPCO Samgakji Substation site (Hangangno 1-ga 231-30 area), which was restricted for development.

In February last year, an interim land use agreement for the public parking lot was signed with KEPCO, and in May, 1.9 billion KRW in special adjustment grants from Seoul City was secured. Construction was carried out for five months from August until last month.

The parking lot will be managed by the Yongsan-gu Facilities Management Corporation, and parking attendants have been assigned to minimize inconvenience to residents during the initial operation. The resident-priority parking spaces are allocated to residents of Hangangno-dong and will be operated on a rotation basis.

Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “The creation of the public parking lot will greatly help alleviate the severe parking shortage around Yongridan-gil in Hangangno-dong,” and added, “We will do our best to secure parking lots and solve illegal parking issues with a keen interest in resolving our district’s parking problems.”
