The city of Suwon in Gyeonggi Province has enrolled in the ‘Citizen Safety Insurance,’ which provides insurance payouts to Suwon citizens who experience unexpected disasters or safety accidents. Suwon citizens are automatically enrolled in the insurance. The coverage area for injury medical expenses under this Citizen Safety Insurance is nationwide.
Suwon citizens (including registered foreigners and overseas Koreans residing in Suwon) who receive treatment for injuries caused by accidents within Korea, including bicycle, electric wheelchair, and personal mobility device (including shared PM) accidents, will have their out-of-pocket medical expenses (covered items) supported.
If a Suwon citizen aged 15 or older dies due to an injury accident within Korea, funeral expenses up to 20 million KRW will be provided, and if a child under 13 is injured in a pedestrian traffic accident, injury treatment expenses up to 500,000 KRW will be paid.
Since 2019, Suwon has enrolled all residents registered in Suwon in the Citizen Safety Insurance annually, allowing them to receive insurance benefits free of charge. Last year, the coverage area was expanded nationwide.
Insurance claims can be made within 3 years from the date of the accident, but only for treatments received within 1 year from the accident date. After contacting the Suwon Citizen Safety Insurance Compensation Center (02-2135-9453), prepare the necessary documents and submit the claim via fax or email. Coverage can overlap with personal insurance.

A Suwon city official stated, "Since expanding the coverage area nationwide last year, more citizens have applied for the Citizen Safety Insurance," adding, "We hope the Citizen Safety Insurance will provide some help to citizens who experience unexpected accidents."
