In China, it was revealed that a tenant converted a rental apartment into a chicken farm and operated it for two years. On the 1st, local Chinese media including the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that tenant B, living in an apartment in Shanghai, was raising chickens inside the home, causing controversy. Earlier, apartment owner A in Shanghai visited the rented property after two years and witnessed a shocking scene. The living room was filled with chicken coops, and chicks were roaming around the house.

What was most severe was the foul odor. The owner expressed frustration, saying, "The smell is terrible, and the floor and walls are severely damaged," adding, "The entire place needs renovation." He also mentioned, "The repair costs will far exceed two years' worth of rent." Neighbors are also suffering from the stench. A resident living in the same apartment complex said, "Residents have filed multiple complaints with the management office due to the smell, but the tenant just closes the windows."
Tenant B is reportedly still living in the bedroom of the apartment. Lawyer Zhang Ying from Jilin Water Law Office explained, "Under Chinese civil law, if a tenant changes the use of the property, the landlord can terminate the lease agreement. Even if the contract does not specify use restrictions, the landlord can claim damages for abnormal use."
This incident has sparked heated debate among netizens in China. Some netizens reacted, saying, "It's selfish to ruin someone else's home like this," and "I can't understand how anyone can live in such a foul-smelling place." On the other hand, some defended the tenant, saying, "As long as they pay the agreed rent, they are free to do whatever they want in the rented place."
