[Aircraft Crash] Gwangju City Provides 'Special Mortuary' Support

Gwangju City and Gwangju Urban Corporation announced on the 1st that they will provide a separate memorial room at Yeongnak Park Memorial Hall as a support measure for the funerals of the victims of the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster.

This measure follows a request made by the bereaved families of the victims during a meeting with Mayor Kang Gijung on the 31st of last month, asking for a separate room so that victims who were family members or colleagues and perished together in the disaster would not be scattered in different locations.

It is expected that providing a separate room will reduce confusion during the funeral procedures and enhance the meaning of remembrance for the victims.

The city will also assign a dedicated staff member to each bereaved family wishing to use Yeongnak Park, to support them through the funeral process. The facility, which can cremate up to 38 bodies per day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., will extend its operating hours to 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., increasing the total number of cremations to 55 per day.

In addition, if requested by the bereaved families, the city will assist with obituary announcements through the Gwangju City website and news agencies.

Mayor Kang Gijung said, "We will do our utmost to minimize the inconvenience of the bereaved families by providing a separate memorial room at Yeongnak Park and assisting with obituary announcements and other funeral procedures."
