Transmission of Russian natural gas supplied to Europe via Ukrainian territory was halted starting from the 1st (local time).
According to Yonhap News and others, Herman Halushchenko, Ukraine's Minister of Energy, stated in a press release on the day, "We have stopped the transit of Russian gas," adding, "This is a historic event; Russia will lose its market and suffer financial losses." The Ukrainian Ministry of Energy particularly emphasized that the suspension was a measure for 'national security.'
Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom also announced, "As of 8 a.m. Moscow time on the 1st, the supply of Russian gas through Ukraine will be stopped." Gazprom had a five-year gas pipeline usage contract with Ukraine, which expired on the last day of last year. Ukraine maintained the contract even after the war with Russia began in late February 2022, but this time decided not to renew it.
Due to Ukraine's recent action, gas supplies to European Union (EU) member countries such as the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and Moldova have been impacted.
