Men cite economic downturn as top concern, women point to distrust in the opposite sex
Over 60% of men and women say "I missed my ideal type due to my own mistakes"
The economic downturn has been identified as the biggest obstacle to remarriage for divorced men and women. In particular, men were found to be significantly affected.
Remarriage information company Only-U and marriage information company Bienarae released the results of a survey on January 1 titled "The Biggest Reason for Low Remarriage Activity in 2024." The survey was conducted with 538 divorced men and women nationwide (269 men and 269 women each).
According to the survey, 31.2% of men cited the "economic downturn" as the most significant factor. For women, 32.7% selected "distrust of the opposite sex" as the most important reason.
Lee Kyung, General Manager of Bienarae, explained, "Divorced individuals generally have weakened financial power because assets are divided upon divorce regardless of gender. Due to the recent economic downturn, not only self-employed and small business workers but also office workers are directly or indirectly affected in their remarriage prospects."
As the second biggest factor, 27.1% of men chose "distrust of the opposite sex," while 26% of women selected the "economic downturn." The third place was "work-related issues (21.3%)" for men and "family care (18.6%)" for women. In fourth place, both men and women named "heatwave (men 14.1%, women 15.6%)."
Meanwhile, a survey was also conducted asking divorced individuals who attended remarriage matchmaking meetings about the reasons they were disappointed with their partners.
For men, 38.3% answered "photo retouching," followed by "lack of sense (23.4%)." Women cited "no fun (completely uninteresting)" as the top reason at 30.5%, followed by "lack of manners (25.3%)." Both men and women ranked "lack of communication (men 17.1%, women 20.8%)" third.
Additionally, when asked if they had ever missed out on an ideal remarriage partner due to their own mistakes this year, 67.3% of men and 62.1% of women answered "yes."
An Only-U representative said, "In remarriage dating, many precious relationships are lost due to careless attire, inappropriate behavior, and lack of consideration."
They added, "In relationships between the sexes, mutual harmony and communication, which are not outwardly visible, have a profound impact. Therefore, rather than being overly fixated on conditions, if you meet people broadly with a proactive attitude, unexpected connections can be made."
