Gyeonggi-do Tracks Hidden Assets of High-Value Tax Delinquents... 4.9 Billion KRW Collected

Gyeonggi Province has conducted vigorous collection activities targeting 1,884 local tax delinquents who have issued checks worth more than 30 million KRW in the past two years, collecting 4.9 billion KRW in local tax arrears.

From March to December last year, Gyeonggi Province meticulously analyzed check issuance information from over 20 major financial institutions for nine months, seizing and collecting unused checks issued by local tax delinquents or encouraging voluntary payment of arrears. Additionally, they investigated residence status and asset conditions, and in cases suspected of hidden assets, enforced compulsory execution through house searches.

Analysis of check issuance information revealed that the total amount of checks issued by 1,884 high-value delinquents who owed more than 10 million KRW in local taxes over the past two years was 495.1 billion KRW, with their local tax arrears amounting to 129.1 billion KRW.

Through field-centered collection activities, Gyeonggi Province collected 4.9 billion KRW in local tax arrears from 433 high-value delinquents. Among them, 210 individuals had 3 billion KRW seized through the right to claim repayment on unused checks, and 169 individuals had 488 movable properties seized through house searches, securing substantial claims.

No Seung-ho, Director of the Tax Justice Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "This collection activity is characterized by going beyond the conventional document-centered administrative procedures to directly verify and thoroughly investigate the actual residence and asset status of delinquents, thereby enhancing collection efficiency." He added, "Based on accumulated investigation techniques and experience, we will develop standard guidelines for arrears collection and strengthen public campaigns to promote a culture of sincere tax payment, establishing a systematic collection system."
