Goyang City Announces Basic Plan for Coffee Industry Development
4 Major Strategies Revealed... 2 Strategic Tasks and 23 Unit Tasks Established
Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced the ‘Basic Plan for Coffee Industry Promotion’ on the 31st to brand itself as a representative coffee city.
The Basic Plan for Coffee Industry Promotion contains measures to develop the local coffee industry in line with the growth of the domestic and international coffee industries and Goyang City's excellent conditions for the coffee industry.
To establish the basic plan, Goyang City conducted preliminary research through the Goyang Research Institute, held roundtable discussions with mid-sized coffee companies in Goyang, and conducted a comprehensive survey of about 2,000 coffee companies in Goyang City to set the policy direction.
Through this, the vision of ‘1 million population, 1,000 types of coffee! Goyang, a coffee city leading local coffee culture!’ was presented, along with four major strategies and 12 strategic tasks and 23 unit tasks: ▲ Branding Goyang as the hub of coffee bean distribution ▲ Supporting the revitalization of small cafe businesses ▲ Building coffee industry infrastructure in Goyang ▲ Creating a circular economy through coffee.
Key projects include ▲ The establishment of the ‘Goyang Roastery Popup Center,’ a temporary promotional space for coffee bean product manufacturers and sellers, introduced for the first time in Korea to become a foothold for coffee bean distribution in the metropolitan area ▲ The establishment of the ‘Goyang City-Dongguk University Joint Coffee Research Support Center,’ a coffee industry-academia cooperation system ▲ The establishment of the ‘Goyang-style Coffee Education Center,’ a coffee education and experience space for citizens.
Additionally, plans include creating a Goyang coffee industrial complex upon designation as an economic free zone, supporting local events related to green coffee bean trade, and distributing coffee plant pots to citizens as companion plants, among various detailed projects to foster the coffee industry.
Meanwhile, on the 23rd, the city held a food policy forum at the Baekseok annex. In the expert discussion chaired by Kim Hong-sang, director of the Agricultural Policy Research Center, panelists including Professor Lee Kwang-geun of Dongguk University’s Department of Food and Biotechnology (coffee research field), Hwang Ho-rim, director of Coffee Science (coffee industry field), Kim Ui-su, CEO of K-Bridge Insight Co., Ltd. (processed food field), and Na Do-eun, executive chairman of the Goyang Sustainable Development Council (sustainability field) participated in in-depth discussions on fostering Goyang’s coffee industry.
The experts expressed strong agreement with Goyang City’s basic plan and suggested that, as a latecomer in the coffee industry, Goyang should develop policies with a long-term perspective of over 10 years to successfully establish itself as a coffee city. They also recommended focusing more on discovering policies for business creation such as secondary processing including green bean fermentation and new material industries, as well as support for small business owners.
Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City stated, “Coffee is an important future food industry among luxury goods that can be linked to various derivative industries,” adding, “Although we are latecomers compared to major cities nationwide, just as Goyang’s local food industry started late but achieved the greatest success nationwide, the coffee industry will also be able to lead the domestic ‘coffee city’ brand competition because Goyang has prepared a unique and special strategy.”
