Kim Sang-hoon Reappointed as Policy Committee Chairman... Lee Yang-soo Appointed as Secretary-General
On the 30th, Kwon Young-se, the Emergency Response Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, appointed as his first personnel after taking office, Im E-ja (3rd term, Sangju-si and Mungyeong-si, Gyeongbuk), Choi Hyung-doo (2nd term, Changwon Masanhappo-gu, Gyeongnam), Choi Bo-yoon (1st term, proportional representation), and Kim Yong-tae (1st term, Pocheon-si and Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi) as members of the Emergency Response Committee.
On the same day, the People Power Party announced that Chairman Kwon had appointed five appointed and ex officio members of the Emergency Response Committee. Kim Sang-hoon, the current chairman of the Policy Committee (4th term, Seo-gu, Daegu), was retained as the ex officio member of the Emergency Response Committee.
The Emergency Response Committee members are evaluated to have been appointed as figures with weak factional colors and capable of encompassing various social strata. Im E-ja, a former vice chairman of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, is a senior three-term lawmaker within the party and belongs to the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee. Choi Hyung-doo, representing the Busan-Gyeongnam (PK) region, is a former media professional currently serving as the ruling party's floor whip on the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee.
Choi Bo-yoon, who entered politics as a proportional representative for the disabled, currently serves as the chairperson of the People Power Party's Disability Committee. Kim Yong-tae, the youngest lawmaker of the People Power Party (born in 1990), will continue to serve as an Emergency Response Committee member under Chairman Kwon Seong-dong, following the previous term under former Chairman Hwang Woo-yeo from May to July.
Key party positions were also filled. Lee Yang-su (3rd term, Sokcho-si, Inje-gun, Goseong-gun, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon) was appointed as the new Secretary-General, Jo Jeong-hoon (2nd term, Mapo-gu Gap, Seoul) as the Deputy Head of Strategic Planning, and Kim Jae-seop (1st term, Dobong-gu Gap, Seoul) as the Deputy Head of Organization.
Among them, Lee Yang-su, who entered politics from a background as a parliamentary aide, has held major party positions such as Senior Deputy Floor Leader and Deputy Head of Strategic Planning, making him well-versed in internal party affairs.
Shin Dong-wook (1st term, Seocho-gu Eul, Seoul) will serve as the Chief Spokesperson, and Kang Myung-gu (1st term, Gumi-si Eul, Gyeongbuk) as the Secretary to the Emergency Response Committee Chairman. Joo Jin-woo (1st term, Haeundae-gu Gap, Busan) was retained as the Chairperson of the Legal Advisory Committee.
Shin Dong-wook, a former media professional, previously served as the Senior Floor Spokesperson under Floor Leader Chu Kyung-ho. Kang Myung-gu, affiliated with the pro-Yoon (pro-Yoon Suk-yeol) faction, served as the Secretary for National Policy Planning in the Yoon Suk-yeol administration before entering politics.
They will carry out their duties after undergoing appointment procedures according to the party constitution and regulations, including the Standing National Committee and the Emergency Response Committee.
Chairman Kwon's swift completion of appointments for the Emergency Response Committee members and key party officials immediately after taking office is interpreted as a determination to promptly manage the emergency martial law situation, the impeachment crisis, and the Jeju Air passenger plane accident that occurred at Muan Airport in Jeonnam.
In his inaugural speech on the same day, Chairman Kwon said, "I deeply apologize to the people for causing anxiety and concern due to the emergency martial law and presidential impeachment. As the chairman of the ruling party responsible for national governance, I believe restoring politics is the most urgent task the National Assembly must undertake now. I propose to promptly restart the ruling-opposition-government national consultation body."
Later that afternoon, Chairman Kwon visited Muan Airport and comforted the bereaved families, saying, "All government officials, including Acting Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, are doing their best to manage the accident and accompany the victims on their final journey. The People Power Party will also cooperate to the fullest extent."
