Jeju Air Passenger Plane Accident: Actively Maintaining National Mourning Atmosphere
Yangsan City in Gyeongnam has decided to fully cancel the 2024 New Year's Eve Bell Ringing event scheduled for the 31st and New Year's Day 2025, and to significantly downscale the 2025 Cheonseongsan Sunrise event.
This decision was made to actively maintain a national mourning atmosphere after the government designated the period until January 4th as a national mourning period following the unexpected passenger plane accident that occurred on the 29th, according to Yangsan City.
Originally, Yangsan City planned to hold the New Year's Eve Bell Ringing ceremony with citizens at the Yangsan Great Bell area from 9:30 PM on the 31st, to bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new year, including a celebratory performance and sharing messages of hope.
The 2025 Cheonseongsan Sunrise event was scheduled to be held vibrantly at the Cheonseongdae area, the sunrise viewing spot at the summit of Cheonseongsan, starting at 6:20 AM on New Year's Day, with the citizen safety prayer ceremony hosted by the Yangsan Lions Club.
However, the city has decided to cancel all event-type activities and conduct only the citizen safety prayer ceremony solemnly, after consulting with the Yangsan Lions Club, and has begun publicizing this to citizens. The city especially plans to ensure thorough safety measures even for the scaled-down event and will conduct an on-site inspection on the afternoon of the 30th.
Mayor Na Dong-yeon said, “Since the entire nation is grieving due to the unexpected passenger plane accident, we have canceled or significantly downscaled the scheduled year-end and New Year events to actively maintain the mourning atmosphere. Even the significantly reduced sunrise event will be held with particular attention to safety and in a solemn atmosphere focused on the citizen safety prayer ceremony, so that citizens can overcome their pain and create hope again.”
