Germany will hold an early general election on February 23 next year following the dissolution of parliament due to the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's ruling coalition.

On the 27th (local time), the Associated Press reported that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier ordered the dissolution of parliament and the holding of a new election next year.

Chancellor Scholz was 'no confidence' voted on the 16th. The German parliament voted on the confidence motion proposed by Chancellor Scholz that day, resulting in 207 votes in favor, 394 against, and 116 abstentions, leading to its rejection.

The three-party coalition collapsed when Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner on November 6.

Since then, major German political parties have agreed that an early general election should be held on February 23 next year, seven months earlier than scheduled.

In Germany, the president decides on the dissolution of parliament and the holding of elections. Since World War II, the German constitution has prevented the Bundestag from dissolving itself.

Once parliament is dissolved, elections must be held within 60 days.
