Seoul Metro announced that a man in his 60s struck his mobile phone with a shovel inside Line 5 subway, causing smoke, but no casualties occurred thanks to the quick response of passengers and station staff.

At around 10:30 a.m. on the 27th, a complaint about smoke and a smell was reported on a train heading from Sinjeong Station to Mokdong Station on Line 5. This was caused by a man in his 60s, Mr. A, who struck his mobile phone with the shovel he had purchased, breaking the phone and generating smoke.

Fortunately, the train arrived at Mokdong Station, where nearby passengers threw the broken phone out of the train, quickly extinguishing the fire. Station staff, including the Mokdong Station manager, promptly responded to the train to manage safety on site and handed Mr. A over to the police who had just arrived.

Afterwards, the Mokdong Station manager collected the remains of the mobile phone and handed them over to the police, who are currently investigating Mr. A.

Ma Hae-geun, Head of Operations at Seoul Metro, said, “If crimes or disorderly conduct occur inside the subway, we ask that you report it quickly to staff for prompt action,” adding, “Our employees will do their best to ensure citizens’ safe use of the subway.”
