To Be Held in Haeje-myeon Area on January 18-19 Next Year
Muan County in Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) announced on the 26th that it will hold the '2025 Winter Mullet Festival' from January 18 to 19 next year at the Haeje-myeon Residents' Multipurpose Center and the Yanggandari Fish Market area.
This year's festival, under the theme 'Mullet Leaping, Hope Soaring,' aims to showcase the true taste of winter mullet, promote local specialties such as Gopchang Dolgim, Gamtae, shrimp, and Hwangto sweet potatoes, and offer a variety of attractions and activities linked to local tourism resources like Hwangto Mudflat Land, Doripo Pine Forest Trail, Doripo Sunrise and Sunset, and Chilsan Bridge.
During the festival, 22 diverse programs across five categories will be operated, including the sale of local agricultural and marine specialties, community cooperation events, and a grilling zone utilizing local products such as mullet, sweet potatoes, seaweed, oysters, and shrimp, all designed to invigorate the local community.
Additionally, the festival's popular programs, 'Catch the Golden Mullet' and the one-day class 'Mullet Sushi Making,' will be held four times daily. Unlike previous years, the mullet catching experience will be open to adults as well, and each session, the child who catches the largest mullet will be awarded 1g of gold.
Muan mullet, raised on pristine mudflats, is renowned for its exceptional taste, with locals saying it is "as sweet as the mud it eats." Historically, it was one of the main tribute products presented to the king, and its prominence is recorded in ancient documents such as the Sejong Sillok Jiriji, Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam, Yeoji Doseo, and Muan Eupji, indicating the long-standing reputation of Muan mullet. The sashimi, with its white flesh tinged with red, is at its peak in January, boasting a chewy texture and savory flavor.
Governor Kim San said, "I hope that in January 2025, visitors will come to Muan to enjoy mullet, a healthy and delicious winter delicacy, and fully appreciate the beauty of the winter sea and the golden sunset of the West Coast, embraced by Muan's pristine mudflats."
