Yeongdeungpo-gu Focuses on Managing Elderly in Health-Vulnerable Groups Amid Cold Wave

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) Health Center announced that it will strengthen home visit health management for vulnerable elderly people during the winter cold wave period until March next year to promote their health and safety.

The district actively operates a health management program utilizing visiting nurses for rapid response and systematic management targeting vulnerable groups such as elderly living alone and those with mobility difficulties.

During this cold wave period, the number of target individuals will be expanded to about 5,000 to further strengthen management and support.

When a cold wave is forecasted, visiting nurses will intensively monitor the health status of high-risk elderly such as those living alone and chronic disease patients. Through regular visits, they carefully check health indicators such as body temperature and blood sugar, and simultaneously inspect the living environment to prevent unexpected safety accidents like falls inside the home.

In particular, visiting nurses manage the health of vulnerable groups more effectively through various welfare projects utilizing the latest technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), continuing advanced public health administration.

Additionally, education on cold wave prevention and winter safety will be strengthened so that elderly people can protect their own health. Visiting nurses provide guidance on basic living rules such as maintaining appropriate indoor temperature, wearing warm clothing, and proper meal and fluid intake through home visits and phone consultations. Especially for high-risk elderly, detailed information on cold-related illness prevention and emergency response methods is provided, emphasizing the importance of management.

When the Korea Meteorological Administration issues a cold wave advisory, cold wave information is promptly delivered through group text messages, notification talks, and the district’s SNS to ensure residents’ safety. Along with this, a ‘Cold Wave Disaster Safety Monitoring Team’ operates to maintain an emergency duty system regardless of weekdays or holidays.

On December 4th, the district held a communication meeting with visiting nurses to encourage and express gratitude for the dedication of nurses working on the front lines for residents’ health management. At this event, District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon listened to field difficulties and improvement suggestions and discussed ways to develop health and welfare projects together.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “Since winter cold waves can pose a great threat to vulnerable groups, meticulous management is more important than anything else,” and added, “We will continue to do our best so that residents can spend a safe and warm winter through systematic health management using visiting nurses and smart technology.”
