Installation and Replacement of 'Visible Fire Extinguishers' at 40 Locations Including Narrow Residential Alleys Difficult for Fire Trucks to Access
Acts as One Fire Truck in Early Fire Stage... Enables Rapid Initial Response and Prevents Large Fire Spread
Creating a Safe and Dense Environment Against Fires to Enhance Residents' Peace of Mind
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it has completed the installation of ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’ at 40 fire-vulnerable locations such as narrow alleyways to facilitate rapid initial response in case of fire and further enhance residents' safety.
The new installation and replacement of ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’ aim to eliminate fire blind spots in alleyways and other areas where fire trucks have difficulty accessing, thereby preventing the spread to large-scale disasters and strengthening the initial response system.
According to data announced by the Seoul Fire & Disaster Headquarters in 2022, the total number of cases where citizens directly extinguished fires using ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’ reached 706 by last year, showing an increasing trend annually.
Since the beginning of the year, the district has selected installation sites through on-site inspections with local community centers. The targets are mainly alleyways in villa complexes, multi-family houses, jjokbangchon (small rooms villages), and commercial areas where fire truck access is difficult. Additionally, replacement work was carried out for old or corroded ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’.
The ‘Visible Fire Extinguisher’ boxes are made of transparent acrylic material so that the fire extinguisher inside can be easily seen, and they are placed in highly visible locations for immediate use in emergencies. Instructions for using the fire extinguisher are also written on the side of the box, allowing quick response even if one forgets how to use it in a panic.
By using the ‘Smart Seoul Map’ website, residents can easily check the installation status and locations of ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’ in their neighborhoods at a glance.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “Since a visible fire extinguisher functions as effectively as one fire truck, it can prevent the fire from spreading into a large blaze through early fire suppression.” He added, “We will continue to protect residents’ lives and property from damage and create a safe city Yeongdeungpo through regular inspections.”
