"Shaking the Impeachment Card to Launch State Dictatorship"
"Forcing Personnel Hearings at Will"
"Just Thinking About It Is Horrifying"
On the 23rd, during a confirmation hearing for Constitutional Court justice nominees held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, Na Kyung-won, a member of the People Power Party, criticized the Democratic Party of Korea, calling it an "omnipotent power."
Na opened her remarks on her social media account by saying, "The Democratic Party is pressuring Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo day after day." She added, "Yesterday, they threatened to enforce an unconstitutional special prosecutor law," and said, "Wielding the impeachment card and shaking it, it seems as if they have already become the ruling party, starting a form of authoritarian rule over state affairs."
She continued, "Today, they held a confirmation hearing for Constitutional Court justices, which had been delayed for the purpose of paralyzing the Korea Communications Commission and obstructing state affairs," and criticized, "They arbitrarily decided the chairman of the confirmation hearing committee, recommended two Constitutional Court justices at will, and are even conducting the confirmation hearing as they please." She further pointed out, "They put forward candidates with extremely political biases, such as those who have a history of being warned by the court for attending and donating to a support meeting for the Progressive Party leader," and explained, "As is known, the position of the Constitutional Court Chief Justice, which has been vacant since October, could not be nominated because opposition party consent was impossible."
In conclusion, Na said, "Just thinking about it is terrifying. If the Democratic Party, which has exercised omnipotent parliamentary power and carried out various legislative and parliamentary dictatorships, truly gains power, South Korea will experience authoritarian rule over state affairs where everything is done according to Lee Jae-myung’s Democratic Party," and argued, "For this reason alone, genuine constitutional amendment discussions are necessary."
Earlier, the National Assembly’s Special Committee on Confirmation Hearings held a hearing for the Constitutional Court justice nominees Jeong Gye-seon (55, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 27) and Ma Eun-hyeok (61, class 29). The hearing was conducted solely by the opposition party as the ruling party did not attend. Kim Han-gyu, the opposition party’s secretary of the confirmation hearing committee and a member of the Democratic Party, expressed regret, saying, "It is very regrettable that a People Power Party member of the confirmation hearing committee did not attend the hearing," and added, "Before President Yoon’s illegal emergency martial law on the 3rd of this month, the Democratic Party had already agreed to recommend two Constitutional Court justice nominees and the People Power Party one, and this is unrelated to the presidential impeachment motion." Meanwhile, on the 24th, a confirmation hearing will be held for Cho Han-chang (59, class 18), a nominee recommended by the People Power Party.
