Customized Support for Professional Counselors
Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) is strengthening its “community-based smoking cessation service” through the operation of a smoking cessation clinic to help residents who wish to quit smoking succeed and to create a healthy smoke-free environment in the new year.
A resident of Yangcheon-gu is receiving a smoking cessation success certificate after participating in the mobile smoking cessation clinic program. Provided by Yangcheon-gu.
The Yangcheon-gu Public Health Center operates the “Smoking Cessation Clinic” year-round on the 4th floor. The support program consists of three stages: preparation, practice, and maintenance of smoking cessation, offering one-on-one smoking cessation counseling and education, personalized smoking cessation aids and behavioral therapy, and linkage to prescription smoking cessation medications. Participants in the smoking cessation program can receive free professional counseling services and smoking cessation aids.
For residents who find it difficult to visit the health center on weekdays, a “Visiting Mobile Smoking Cessation Clinic” is operated at workplaces, apartments, senior centers, and other locations to provide smoking cessation counseling and services. Professional smoking cessation counselors will visit the requested locations three times at two-week intervals to provide one-on-one counseling and support services.
Over the past year, a total of 1,261 residents registered at the Yangcheon-gu Smoking Cessation Clinic, and among the registered participants, 531 (42%) have succeeded in quitting smoking or are maintaining cessation. Of these, 331 (26.3%) successfully quit smoking, and 200 (15.8%) are maintaining cessation with the help of the health center’s smoking cessation clinic. Additionally, through the “Visiting Mobile Smoking Cessation Clinic,” visits were made to 10 workplaces within the district, providing smoking cessation support services to a total of 203 people, of whom 37 (18.2%) succeeded in quitting smoking.
The Yangcheon-gu Public Health Center Smoking Cessation Clinic operates on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and every Wednesday morning, the clinic is also held at Mokdong Health Branch (1st and 3rd weeks) and Sinwol Health Branch (2nd and 4th weeks). The “Visiting Mobile Smoking Cessation Clinic” can be requested at all workplaces and living spaces (apartments, senior centers, etc.) within the district.
Meanwhile, the district is promoting the “Visiting Youth Clean School” program targeting elementary, middle, and high school students in the district to prevent youth smoking in advance and spread a smoke-free culture. It is also making multifaceted efforts to reduce the community smoking rate and protect residents’ health, such as designating all taxi stands in the area as completely smoke-free zones.
District Mayor Lee Gi-jae said, “I hope everyone succeeds in quitting smoking for themselves, their families, and those around them, and I encourage you to visit the Yangcheon-gu Smoking Cessation Clinic for support,” adding, “We will continue to strive to create a healthy smoking cessation environment for local residents.”
