Proposal to Reduce Number of Lawyers Trained and Reinstate Criminal Success Fees
On the 20th, Kim Jeong-wook, President of the Seoul Bar Association (right), announced his candidacy for the Korean Bar Association presidential election to be held on January 20.
Kim Jung-wook (45, 2nd Bar Exam) and former president of the Seoul Bar Association completed his candidate registration on the 20th to run for the next president of the Korean Bar Association.
On the 20th, Kim completed his registration as a candidate for the 53rd Korean Bar Association presidential election and stated, “I will strive for the unification and development of the lawyer community.” Kim explained, “I successfully proposed seven bills to expand the legal profession, blocked legislative attempts by similar professions, and prevented unlawful administrative legislation.” He also said, “I actively filed cancellation lawsuits against unlawful dispositions by the Fair Trade Commission and won all of them.”
His main pledges include ▲restoring lawyers’ authority encroached upon by similar professions ▲completing the legal profession expansion bills ▲reviving criminal success fees ▲regulating network law firms ▲forming a consultative body to respond to platforms and artificial intelligence (AI) ▲supporting work-family balance such as exempting monthly dues for male and female members with childbirth and family responsibilities ▲significantly reducing mandatory public interest activities, and other institutional improvements.
Kim emphasized, “I have experience and know-how gained through trial and error,” and “I can present concrete details rather than empty promises.” He expressed his ambition to continuously advance the association’s development based on accumulated achievements.
Kim began his legal career by passing the 2nd Bar Exam. He then served as Secretary General of the Bar Association General Assembly, Vice President of the Bar Association, Vice President of the Seoul Bar Association, and was the 96th and 97th president of the Seoul Bar Association. Kim stepped down from the Seoul Bar Association presidency the day before.
