Cyclone 'Chido' Passes Mozambique, Death Toll Reaches 73

Over 39,100 Houses Destroyed... More Than 182,000 Displaced Persons

The death toll in Mozambique due to the tropical storm cyclone 'Chido' has reached 73, according to reports from Al Jazeera and others on the 19th (local time).

Mozambique's National Disaster Management Agency announced on the same day that Chido, which made landfall in Cabo Delgado Province in the north on the 15th, caused 66 deaths in Cabo Delgado Province, 4 in Nampula Province, 3 in Niassa Province, and 1 person is missing.


This is an increase of 28 from the 45 deaths recorded on the 18th. In addition, 543 people were injured, and more than 39,100 houses were destroyed. Over 182,000 people have been displaced.


In the neighboring inland country of Malawi to the northwest, at least 13 people died and 30 were injured as Cyclone Chido passed through on the 16th.


Earlier, on the 14th, Chido struck Mayotte Island, a French territory in the Comoros archipelago in the eastern Indian Ocean of Africa, resulting in 31 deaths and over 1,500 injuries, including about 200 seriously injured.
