Democratic Party's Kang Yujeong: "I Will Identify Media Sympathizing with Insurrection"... Pressure on Yonhap News and Others

The National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee Also Demands a 'Hearing Against Media Companies'

The Democratic Party of Korea referred to the 12.3 martial law emergency situation coverage by public broadcasters, claiming that "media outlets are systematically defending President Yoon Seok-yeol's insurrection." Democratic Party lawmakers from the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee (CSTC) are pressuring some media companies by threatening to hold hearings.

The Democratic Party's Yoon Seok-yeol Insurrection Investigation Team held a meeting at the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 20th. Lawmaker Kang Yoo-jung, who attended the meeting, stated, "Kukbang Ilbo, KTV, and Yonhap News are distorting facts and engaging in coverage that glorifies the insurrection," adding, "Article 87 of the Criminal Act stipulates imprisonment for propaganda and incitement related to insurrection." She believes that the three mentioned outlets downplayed the situation during the martial law period.

Lawmaker Kang said, "Fair media must stop the distortion of truth by the 'Yoon Seok-yeol remnants' and halt the insurrection crimes," adding, "Today, the CSTC is also conducting urgent inquiries targeting KTV, which is owned by the Korea Policy Broadcasting Corporation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism." She further stated, "The Democratic Party's Yoon Seok-yeol Insurrection Investigation Team will also identify and bring to justice media outlets that sympathize with the insurrection." Lawmaker Kang is a member of the CSTC.

Earlier, within the CSTC, there was a dispute over allegations that KTV instructed the deletion of news captions related to politicians criticizing the declaration of martial law during a special report on the 3rd. KTV Director Lee Eun-woo explained, "KTV is a broadcaster representing the executive branch," and "the caption in question does not align at all with the government's policy broadcasting stance."
