The event was attended by over 170 people, including Lee Dong-hwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, and Lee Jeong-yeol, President of Joongbu University, along with key figures in the disabled sports community, to encourage the hard work of disabled athletes throughout the year and celebrate their achievements.
At the event, the Goyang City Disabled Sports Association signed a memorandum of understanding for continuous mutual cooperation in disabled sports and related projects with the Goyang Veterans Police Association (President Kim Seong-ju), a volunteer organization of retired police officers.
With Joongbu University, they formed mentor-mentee pairs between about 20 students from the Department of Special Physical Education, including related faculty members, and disabled athletes to promote the systematic development of disabled sports.
This mentor-mentee formation ceremony is a continuation of the memorandum of understanding signed between Joongbu University and the Goyang City Disabled Sports Association on December 2nd and holds great significance as the practical first step toward realizing the shared goal of ‘advancing disabled sports.’
Through this, Joongbu University students are expected to gain opportunities to learn field experience and knowledge from mentors, combining theory and practice, and grow into experts in the field of disabled sports.
Lee Dong-hwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, encouraged disabled athletes by saying, “I thank all disabled athletes who have brightened disabled sports in Goyang Special City this year. This achievement is a precious result created by your sweat and effort.”
In his congratulatory speech, Lee Jeong-yeol, President of Joongbu University, stated, “The growth of disabled sports is not just about exercise but an important process of creating an inclusive society and a healthy future. The cooperation between the Goyang City Disabled Sports Association and Joongbu University’s Department of Special Physical Education is expected to establish itself as the nation’s first case presenting new opportunities and innovations in the field of disabled sports. We will spare no effort and continuous support for the advancement of disabled sports.”
In the second part of the event, the launch ceremony of the Disabled Sports Supporters Group officially marked the start of a volunteer group specialized in disabled sports. The ‘Disabled Sports Supporters Group’ will support disabled sports competitions organized by the Goyang City Disabled Sports Association and the training of disabled athletes, and will carry out volunteer activities for the development of disabled sports.
