Completion of Georeuncheon Local Stream Maintenance Project in Yeoju City... Expected Flood Prevention Effects Gyeonggi Province completed the Georeuncheon local stream maintenance project, which had been underway in the Georeun-ri area of Gangcheon-myeon, Yeoju City, on the 19th. The local stream maintenance project is a disaster prevention initiative aimed at reinforcing embankments and improving waterways in areas expected to suffer flood damage. The province invested a total of 8.5 billion KRW in the Georeuncheon local stream maintenance project, which began in April 2022, renovating a 0.9 km stretch of the stream and six bridges.

Through the maintenance project, the width of Georeuncheon, which was previously 6 to 11 meters, was expanded to 12 to 17 meters, significantly enhancing flood prevention capabilities. Additionally, embankments and riverbanks susceptible to erosion by flowing water were reinforced to improve safety.

Furthermore, six bridges vulnerable to flood damage due to insufficient clearance height (the extra height secured to prevent flooding during floods) and span length (the distance from the center of one pier to the center of the adjacent pier), including Magam 1 Bridge, were all reconstructed according to the basic river plan and river facility standards.

For embankment protection, the province applied landscaping stone stacking as a revetment method, creating an eco-friendly river environment while defending against floods. Embankment roads, surrounding access roads, and vehicle entrances and exits were also improved to ensure residents can travel safely.

Kang Seong-seup, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Construction Bureau, stated, “We will continue to actively focus on maintaining areas expected to experience flood damage and do our utmost to protect the lives and property of residents from heavy rain.”
