Goyang-si Signs MOU with Agricultural Groups for Carbon Reduction and Resource Circulation Using Coffee Grounds Goyang Special City signed a business agreement on the 18th with agricultural organizations such as the Goyang City Nakwoohoe, Hanwoo Association, Poultry Association, and Cactus Research Association to reduce carbon emissions and promote resource circulation using coffee grounds. Through this agreement, the city will collaborate with agricultural organizations to utilize discarded coffee grounds in the agriculture and livestock sectors and jointly develop technologies to reduce diseases and pests in floricultural crops.

Coffee grounds are a valuable recyclable resource that reduces livestock manure odors at livestock farms, serves as high-quality organic compost for soil, and decreases the use of volume-based waste bags at coffee shops, thereby reducing carbon emissions.

Since 2023, Goyang Special City has collected coffee grounds discarded from cafes within the city as part of a resource circulation research project and applied 338 tons of them as bedding material in 14 livestock farms. As a result, coffee grounds reduced livestock manure odors by more than 95% and decreased the occurrence of harmful insects, proving beneficial to the livestock rearing environment.

This was made possible through active collaboration with organizations participating in coffee grounds collection and demonstration research, including the Goyang City Nakwoo and Hanwoo Farming Association Corporation, 30 cafes participating in coffee grounds collection, and social enterprises.

Additionally, as a second phase of research, plans are underway to verify the effects of coffee grounds livestock manure compost on preventing diseases and pests and promoting growth in horticultural (floriculture and cactus) crops.

A livestock farm representative attending the event emphasized, “The use of coffee grounds is essential because it effectively reduces manure odors and improves the livestock rearing environment,” calling for active interest and cooperation from related organizations.

Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City stated, “For a coffee grounds resource circulation supply system to be established, active participation from related departments, affiliated organizations, and coffee shops is necessary,” adding, “We will cooperate together to support livestock and floricultural farmers.”
