Doosan Enerbility Selected as Main Equipment Supplier for US TerraPower SMR

Start of Main Equipment Production Including Reactor Pressure Vessel Next Year
Terra to Build One 345MW SMR in Wyoming

Doosan Enerbility will supply main equipment for TerraPower's first small modular reactor (SMR) project in the United States.

Doosan Enerbility announced on the 19th that it has signed a contract with TerraPower to review the manufacturability of SMR main equipment.

Doosan Enerbility will conduct a feasibility study and design support services for the production of TerraPower's initial SMR equipment, and plans to begin manufacturing three main pieces of equipment?reactor pressure vessel, reactor support structure, and core barrel structure?from next year.

TerraPower, founded in 2008 by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, is an SMR developer that possesses design technology for sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFR), a type of 4th generation SMR. This technology operates by transferring heat generated from nuclear fission to liquid sodium coolant, which then produces steam to generate electricity.

4th generation SMRs are small reactors that use coolants other than water, such as sodium-cooled fast reactors and high-temperature gas reactors, and are evaluated to have high safety and economic efficiency.

Currently, TerraPower is advancing a project to build a 345MW capacity SMR unit near a coal-fired power plant site in Wyoming, USA.

For this project, where the initial SMR unit will be installed, TerraPower became the first 4th generation SMR developer to apply for a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in March and has started construction of the SMR power block. The project is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and is on track for commercial operation by 2030.

Kim Jong-du, Vice President of Nuclear BG at Doosan Enerbility, said, "We are very proud to participate in TerraPower's initial SMR project, having been recognized for our excellent manufacturing capabilities. We will further enhance our manufacturing capabilities and promote the construction of a new manufacturing plant to establish ourselves as a leading global SMR foundry company."
