At the ceremony, Kim Seong-jun, Head of Store Strategy Team at Gwangju Shinsegae, Nam Ki-sang, Director of Exchange Cooperation at the Korea Island Promotion Agency, and Lee Kyung-seok, Head of Island Policy Team at Jeollanam-do, attended, where Gwangju Shinsegae donated electronic book annual subscriptions worth 5 million KRW for students in island regions.

The Island Stamp Challenge, conducted by Gwangju Shinsegae and the Korea Island Promotion Agency since October to raise awareness of Jeollanam-do’s islands at risk of extinction and increase visitors, was carried out through the "WalkOn" application, with over 10,000 participants. The total accumulated steps reached 4.3 billion, surpassing the initial goal of 50 million steps.

In September 2022, Gwangju Shinsegae and the Korea Island Promotion Agency signed a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in promoting the islands of Jeollanam-do. Since then, under the name Island Stamp Challenge, they have operated ESG projects targeting Jeollanam-do’s islands, starting with Yeosu in 2022 and extending to Wando last year.

To encourage participants to naturally visit the islands, the two organizations provided cushions, handkerchiefs, and delivery app coupons worth 10,000 KRW through a lottery. They also showed interest in Jeollanam-do’s islands by delivering food items such as salt and soy milk to island residents.

In addition to the stamp challenge, Gwangju Shinsegae engaged in social contribution activities, such as visiting the Neopdo area of Wando, which suffered severe drought and water shortages in May last year, and donating 10,000 bottles (2L) of bottled water worth 8 million KRW to help resolve the drinking water crisis.

Lee Dong-hoon, CEO of Gwangju Shinsegae, said, “Thanks to the interest of many people, the Island Stamp Challenge, which Gwangju Shinsegae started in cooperation with the Korea Island Promotion Agency, has been successfully carried out through season 3. We will continue to consider and steadily implement ways to coexist with the local community.”
