Self-Developed AI Production System Specialized for Display Manufacturing
Problem Cause Analysis and Improvement Time Reduced from 3 Weeks to 2 Days
LG Display announced on the 18th that it has independently developed and introduced an 'Artificial Intelligence (AI) Production System' to strengthen its competitiveness in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) manufacturing. The company expects to achieve cost savings of over 200 billion KRW annually through the adoption of AI.
The 'AI Production System' is a system in which AI collects and analyzes the entire manufacturing data of the OLED process in real time. OLED production involves more than 140 processes, during which tens of thousands of equipment data points are added, requiring precise management. Until now, even if abnormalities were detected in the products, it was difficult to identify the exact causes. To address this, LG Display trained AI with domain knowledge (specialized knowledge in a specific field) necessary for the OLED manufacturing process. As a result, the AI can automatically analyze numerous possible abnormal cause scenarios occurring in the OLED manufacturing process and derive solutions.
With the introduction of the 'AI Production System,' the time required to analyze and improve the causes of quality abnormalities has been drastically reduced from an average of three weeks to two days. Previously, engineers had to rely on their individual skills and experience to solve problems under limited measurement conditions, which took a long time. Now, AI enables immediate control of the entire production process to meet the optimal quality conditions predicted. At the same time, quality inspections for all produced products are conducted concurrently, allowing real-time monitoring of abnormalities and cause identification.
Additionally, LG Display has established a system where AI classifies and analyzes the data collected in real time and automatically sends it via email to the responsible departments every morning. If AI detects abnormalities during the data analysis process, a process is in place to automatically suspend the operation of the equipment causing the issue, ensuring both speed and safety.
LG Display anticipates that with the application of AI and big data, engineers will reduce the time spent on data collection and analysis and focus more on high-density, high value-added tasks such as deriving solutions and applying improvement measures.
Byungseung Lee, Executive Director of LG Display’s DX Group, said, "We have actively introduced DX in development and manufacturing areas to maximize productivity and enhance manufacturing competitiveness. Through DX, we will improve productivity not only in display development and production but also in general tasks, achieving industry-leading technology and efficiency."
