Left variety show in June due to enlistment
Over 10,000 receive military exemption annually for this reason
Grade 4 supplementary service classification surprisingly common in entertainment industry
Actor Na In-woo's exemption from military service was revealed belatedly. On the 17th, Sports Chosun reported that Na In-woo recently waited for social service worker enlistment but was exempted from military duty. In response to the report, Na In-woo's agency Hanada Company stated, "He received a Grade 4 supplementary service classification and was waiting for contact from the Military Manpower Administration, but after three years, he was notified that he became exempt." Regarding the reason for the Grade 4 supplementary service classification, they withheld comment, saying, "Verification is needed."
According to the Military Service Act, if a person classified as Grade 4 supplementary service is not enlisted within three years, they are exempted from military service. This year, about 11,800 people were exempted after waiting for three years, and since 2019, this number has consistently been over 10,000. Na In-woo is known to be one of the exempted individuals. Earlier in June, Na In-woo also left the KBS 2TV variety show '1 Night 2 Days' Season 4 due to enlistment and other reasons.
It is relatively common for celebrities to receive a Grade 4 supplementary service classification. Previously, Kim Jong-kook was classified due to a herniated disc, actor Kim Rae-won due to degenerative back pain, WINNER's Song Min-ho due to panic disorder and bipolar disorder, Jang Geun-suk due to bipolar disorder, and VIXX member Leo due to depression and panic disorder. Additionally, 2PM member and actor Lee Junho was classified due to a shoulder injury, Super Junior member Kim Heechul due to a physical disability, and Kyuhyun due to aftereffects of a traffic accident. Recently, Kim Ho-joong, who caused controversy over drunk driving, was also classified as Grade 4 supplementary service due to unstable hip joint, neurotic disorder, and pulmonary obstruction.
Meanwhile, Na In-woo gained attention through tvN's 'Mr. Queen' and rose as a lead actor starting with KBS 2TV's 'River Where the Moon Rises.' Earlier this year, he was recognized for his box office appeal with tvN's 'Marry Me Now.' Among these, Na In-woo was also cast as the lead in MBC's new Friday-Saturday drama 'Motel California,' scheduled to air in January next year. It was expected to be his last work before enlistment, but since he received military exemption, Na In-woo is expected to continue his activities going forward.
