Gyeonggi-do Northern Autonomous Police Committee Installs 'Gyeongjeoncheol Spotlight' in Uijeongbu

Localized Autonomous Police Policy Development Contest Project
Installed at Uijeongbu's Representative Attraction, Budae Jjigae Street,
to Prevent Traffic Accidents Caused by Uijeongbu Light Rail Bridge

The Gyeonggi-do Northern Autonomous Police Committee (hereinafter referred to as the ‘Committee’) announced on the 17th that, in collaboration with the Uijeongbu Police Station on the 13th, they installed crosswalk spotlights and traffic facilities near the light rail bridge in the Uijeongbu Budae Jjigae Street to improve the environment for preventing nighttime pedestrian traffic accidents.

The Northern Gyeonggi Provincial Autonomous Police Committee collaborated with the Uijeongbu Police Station on the 13th to install crosswalk spotlights and traffic facilities near the light rail bridge in the Uijeongbu Budae Jjigae Street area, improving the environment to prevent pedestrian traffic accidents at night. This project was selected as the final winner in the ‘Autonomous Police Specialized Project Discovery Contest’ hosted by the Autonomous Police Committee in March, with the Uijeongbu Police Station Traffic Division’s ‘Light Rail Spotlight’ installation project. With a total project cost of 82 million KRW, the installation included ▲3 crosswalk spotlights ▲3 crosswalk floor traffic lights ▲6 pedestrian waiting residual time display devices at 3 locations ▲250 smart markers ▲18 guiding posts at 4 locations. Additionally, a traffic accident prevention publicity campaign was held on the 17th following the project’s completion.

Uijeongbu Budae Jjigae Street is a representative landmark of Uijeongbu City, hosting an annual festival and located near Jeil Market, the largest traditional market in northern Gyeonggi-do, resulting in frequent vehicle traffic and a high number of elderly pedestrians even during normal times.

The Uijeongbu Light Rail Central Station and its bridge are located in the middle of the road, making it difficult for drivers and pedestrians to secure mutual visibility. Especially at night, the streetlight illumination was blocked by the bridge, making the road very dark. With this project, the installation of crosswalk spotlights and other traffic facilities has secured lighting under the light rail bridge, which is expected to have a significant effect on preventing traffic accidents, reducing crime, and improving perceived safety.

Lee Sang-ro, Chairman of the Gyeonggi-do Northern Autonomous Police Committee, stated, “This contest project is a policy discovery initiative tailored to the northern Gyeonggi-do region. In 2025, we will actively pursue and develop public safety policies that allow the residents of northern Gyeonggi-do to live safely.”
