Gyeonggi-do Private Expert Jury Panel Formed, Final Selection of Expo Venue
Held at Ecological Learning Center and Semiwon in Dumulmeori, Yangpyeong-gun
Theme of Overcoming Climate Crisis... Expected to Spread Eco-friendly Garden Culture and Revitalize Local Economy
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 17th that it has selected the Dumulmeori Ecological Learning Center area in Yangpyeong-gun as the venue for the 14th Gyeonggi Garden Culture Expo, scheduled to be held in 2026.
This selection was made after an on-site inspection and evaluation by a panel of expert judges of the four candidate sites that participated in the call for venues for the Gyeonggi Garden Culture Expo.
Yangpyeong-gun has established a total of 59 garden infrastructure facilities, including Semiwon, Korea’s first local garden, village gardens, and private gardens. It has also trained 190 citizen gardeners supporting garden activities at 44 locations. As a result, despite being a county area with less urbanization compared to other regions, it earned the honor of being finally selected as the venue.
Dumulmeori in Yangpyeong-gun covers an area of about 210,000㎡ and is one of the largest tourist destinations in the metropolitan area, attracting more than 1.8 million visitors annually. It is conveniently accessible due to its proximity to Dumulmeori Interchange (IC) and Yangsu Station, and it was evaluated as suitable for hosting the expo because it can utilize various infrastructures such as the visitor center within Semiwon.
Gyeonggi Province has contributed to spreading garden culture in the region by holding the Garden Culture Expo for the first time in 2010 at Okgu Park in Siheung and then rotating the event annually. A total of 12 expos have been held so far, and in October next year, the 13th Gyeonggi Garden Culture Expo will be held at Pyeongtaek Agricultural Ecology Center under the theme “Pyeongtaek’s Garden, Meeting Nature in Everyday Life.”
Lee Jeong-su, Director of the Garden Industry Division of Gyeonggi Province, said, “Yangpyeong Dumulmeori is the point where the Namhan River and Bukhan River meet, boasting outstanding natural scenery and abundant ecological resources. Based on these characteristics, we will hold a garden expo that embodies ecological value. We expect it to have a positive impact not only on revitalizing the local economy but also on spreading sustainable garden culture and responding to the climate crisis.”
