Will a 'Gukjeong Hyup-uiche' Be Formed? Government Says "Ready to Cooperate with the National Assembly"

Lee Jae-myung Proposes Council with National Assembly and Government
Government: "We Will Actively Cooperate with the National Assembly Including Both Ruling and Opposition Parties"

In an effort to resolve the impeachment crisis, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, proposed the formation of a bipartisan national stability council, and the government expressed its readiness to cooperate with the National Assembly regardless of party lines.

A senior official from the Prime Minister's Office stated on the 15th that regarding the council proposed by Lee, "We are prepared to actively cooperate with the National Assembly, including both ruling and opposition parties, to promptly stabilize national affairs in accordance with the Constitution and laws."

On the same day, Lee Jae-myung held his first press conference following the passage of the impeachment motion against President Yoon Seok-youl, saying, "We will actively cooperate with all parties to stabilize national affairs and restore international trust," and proposed "the formation of a national stability council involving both the National Assembly and the government." The idea is to hold policy consultations related to people's livelihoods.

To minimize the national administrative vacuum, he also announced that the impeachment procedure against Acting President Han Deok-su, which had been initially scheduled, would be put on hold. Lee explained, "Since he has already been confirmed as Acting President, and proceeding with too many impeachments could cause confusion in national affairs, we have decided not to proceed with the impeachment process for now."

It is known that Acting President Han Deok-su contacted Lee Jae-myung after starting his duties the previous day. Lee said, "In our conversation, I emphasized that regardless of party lines or factions, we must govern the country from a neutral government standpoint." Regarding the possibility of Acting President Han exercising his veto power on the special prosecutor law and others, Lee conveyed, "The exercise of veto power reflects the policy and political differences between the ruling and opposition parties, and I also mentioned that rejecting either side would be a clear political bias."
