Blinken, US Secretary of State, "Strong Support for the Ironclad ROK-US Alliance"
On the 14th (local time), the U.S. government expressed high praise for the resilience of Korean democracy and the rule of law in relation to the National Assembly's passage of the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol. It also reiterated its readiness to work with Acting President Han Duck-soo and emphasized the strength of the South Korea-U.S. alliance.
A spokesperson for the White House National Security Council (NSC) said on the same day, "The South Korea-U.S. alliance is strong, and the United States is committed to peace and security on the Korean Peninsula." He added, "The American people will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Korean people."
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during a press conference held in Jordan while visiting the Middle East, responded to a question regarding South Korea's impeachment political situation by saying, "It is important that South Korea has demonstrated democratic resilience."
Secretary Blinken stated, "We have witnessed South Korea peacefully following the constitutionally prescribed procedures," and added, "We are ready to work with Acting President Han Duck-soo." He emphasized, "The most important thing is that we strongly support the Korean people," and "We also strongly support the ironclad South Korea-U.S. alliance."
The State Department, in a separate statement, reiterated, "The United States reaffirms its support for South Korea, the Korean people, and democratic processes and the rule of law," and stated, "The U.S. commitment to the South Korea-U.S. alliance is ironclad." It further explained, "Over the years, the South Korea-U.S. alliance has made great progress, and the United States looks forward to achieving even more progress together with South Korea," adding, "We are ready to continue working with Acting President Han Duck-soo and the South Korean government to advance the mutual interests and shared values of both countries."
