A man in China who was kidnapped at three months old and reunited with his biological family last year recently drew attention by refusing to accept three apartments gifted by his biological father.
According to a report on the 12th by Hong Kong media South China Morning Post (SCMP), Xie Qingshuai (26) from Xingtai City, Hebei Province in northern China, who was kidnapped at three months old in January 1999, reunited with his biological family last December. His biological parents, who run a construction company, spent over 1 million yuan (approximately 197 million KRW) over ten years searching for him after losing him, and finally reunited with him recently after much effort.
After Xie's story became known, local people showed great interest, saying that his life changed overnight from that of an orphan to a wealthy person. However, in an interview on the 5th, Xie attracted attention by revealing that he had refused the apartments and car offered by his biological father upon their reunion last year. He explained the reason, saying, "Suddenly accepting wealth can change one's mindset and lead to reckless spending."
In the interview, Xie said, "I was afraid that accepting this gift would change my outlook on life," adding, "I have seen movies where people suddenly become rich and start indulging in extravagant spending, and I felt I might become like that too." He also emphasized, "I don't need anything else. What I want from my father is just an apartment where my parents can live together," and added, "I can buy a car if I work hard and earn a few thousand yuan." In response, local netizens commented, "Truly amazing. How many people could refuse such an offer?" and "So admirable and cool."
