Key Issues Related to the 5·18 Minju Democracy Movement
On the 13th, the 5·18 Memorial Foundation announced the publication of the 65th issue of 'Jumeokbap,' a newsletter delivering key issues related to the May 18 Democratic Uprising.
The newsletter discussing current major issues and discourses includes ▲ the conclusion of the activities of the May 18 Truth Investigation Committee and its future direction ▲ the spirit of Jumeokbap in May Gwangju, which stands in solidarity without hostility or fanaticism ▲ a public forum for everyone's May ▲ the story of the May mothers' painting farm ▲ preserving May through stories ▲ Concrete Voice 2: 505 Security Unit, among others.
Additionally, it covers various domestic and international news such as ▲ the 2024 Hintzpeter International Reporting Award ▲ political participation of Thai students ▲ the future of Myanmar and May 18 ▲ the May 18 Democratic Uprising memorial ceremony in Los Angeles, USA ▲ and the story of Samdal Dabang, a reliable refuge open to all.
In cultural and artistic news, it features ▲ Samsik Uncle ▲ singer Lee Deok-gu’s 'Happy Ending,' comforting youth ▲ 'The Boy is Coming' and May travel, highlighting fragile yet essential human elements ▲ viewing May 1980 in May 2024 ▲ and stories of various visitors to Gwangju for the 5·18 Young Researchers Workshop.
The issue also introduces this year’s 5·18 Press Award-winning works for immediate viewing. The supplement includes an 'May Word Quiz' created by elementary school students in downtown Gwangju.
The Jumeokbap newsletter began with a painting by Jang Hun-myeong, chairman of the 5·18 Gwangju People's Uprising Democratic Taxi Drivers Association, who headed to the square with taxi drivers in May 1980.
Chairman Jang stated, “I took up the brush to remember beyond the pain and suffering of that day,” adding, “I am always grateful to the citizens of Gwangju who enthusiastically cheered and responded to the vehicle protests by taxi and bus drivers at that time.”
A representative of the 5·18 Memorial Foundation said, “We will continue to organize May 18 discourses and plan programs to engage citizens through various news including culture and arts, striving to spread the values of democracy and human rights.”
