Former National Assembly member and profiler Pyo Chang-won claimed on the 12th, immediately after President Yoon Seok-yeol's national address, that it was "shock and terror itself" and insisted that he should be suspended from duty through impeachment.
On that day, Pyo opened his social media account by saying, "Armed and dangerous. A criminal who is armed and dangerous." He said, "In any country in the world, he is a subject who should be immediately arrested and detained to prevent further danger," adding, "Yoon Seok-yeol, the ringleader of the insurrection, has not admitted to the crime at all, yet he is strongly 'armed' as the administrative head who can command, mobilize, and control public authority such as military command and police." He continued, "This morning's emergency address is shock and terror itself. It seems like a message inciting his followers to fiercely resist."
Former Assembly member Pyo emphasized, "There is a basis for the Security Office's resistance to the police search and seizure executing the warrant issued by the court (on the grounds of national secrets and security confidential locations), but there is no basis for resistance to the arrest, which is a personal coercive investigation," adding, "If there is resistance, they should all be arrested on the spot for (special) obstruction of official duties. And he should be suspended from duty through impeachment." Furthermore, he added, "If left as is, there are concerns about accomplices coordinating, widespread destruction of evidence, retaliation against whistleblowers, witnesses, and cooperating investigators. This will not only increase and prolong the enormous damage to the economy, diplomacy, and security caused by the uncertainty of the national governing body and its functions," and urged, "I call for the arrest of Yoon Seok-yeol."
Earlier, President Yoon said in his national address that morning, "The opposition party is wildly dancing the sword dance, claiming that the declaration of martial law constitutes the crime of insurrection," and asked, "Who is the group causing paralysis of state affairs and disruption of the national order in South Korea right now?" He argued, "For the past two and a half years, the major opposition party has not recognized the president elected by the people and has not stopped inciting resignation and impeachment to bring him down. They have not accepted the election results," and claimed, "They have paralyzed state affairs by abusing impeachment." Along with this, he said, "The major opposition party sided with North Korea and only tried to tarnish the government struggling to respond. I don't know which country's party or parliament they belong to," and countered, "These people are the anti-state forces destroying the country."
He also explained, "There have been many more serious matters that I could not reveal directly until now before making the grave decision of martial law," and said, "I judged that I could no longer just watch and thought I had to say something. It is clear that soon the judiciary will also face the sword of impeachment, which made me consider the declaration of martial law." President Yoon said, "Why is the major opposition party rushing impeachment with false incitement? There is only one reason. As the guilty verdict of the major opposition party leader is imminent, they want to avoid it by impeaching the president and hold an early presidential election," adding, "They intend to cover up their crimes and take control of state affairs even if it means destroying the national system." Finally, he said, "Whether they impeach me or investigate me, I will face it boldly. I cannot ignore the country and the people by clinging only to the five-year term," and concluded, "I will fight with the people until the last moment. I apologize once again to the people who were shocked and anxious by this short period of martial law."
