50 Hydrogen Passenger Cars, 14 Hydrogen Buses
Boryeong City in South Chungcheong Province announced on the 12th that it will invest 6.5 billion KRW next year to provide subsidies for the purchase of 50 hydrogen passenger cars and 14 hydrogen buses, in order to expand the distribution of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
The city will prioritize 20% (10 units) of the passenger cars for vulnerable groups, families with multiple children, first-time vehicle buyers, and those purchasing vehicles with high fine dust reduction effects.
So far, the city has distributed a total of 107 hydrogen vehicles, including 100 hydrogen passenger cars and 7 hydrogen buses. Next year, 64 more vehicles will be distributed, with a plan to supply more than 500 hydrogen vehicles by 2030.
In particular, the release of the significantly improved second-generation Nexo ‘Inisium Concept’ is scheduled for next year, which is expected to further increase hydrogen vehicle purchases.
Those wishing to purchase a hydrogen vehicle can apply for support only if the vehicle can be delivered and registered within two months after signing the purchase contract and being selected as a recipient.
Additionally, starting February 1, 2025, applicants must submit the relevant documents to the low-emission vehicle subsidy support system through the manufacturer or importer. Recipients will be selected in the order of vehicle delivery and registration.
Eligible applicants are individuals aged 18 or older who have resided in Boryeong City for at least three months prior to the application date, as well as corporations and public enterprises with offices in the city.
The subsidy for Hyundai Motor’s hydrogen vehicle ‘Nexo’ is 37.5 million KRW per unit, and the total expected purchase price is between 67 million and 70 million KRW, making it relatively affordable.
Mayor Kim Dongil said, “We expect the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle distribution project to be effective in reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to eco-friendly energy,” adding, “We will continue to actively promote hydrogen vehicles to complete the hydrogen city and expand energy welfare benefits.”
