The Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters will conduct a focused crackdown on the distribution of unapproved fire extinguishers that have not received type approval or whose extinguishing performance has not been verified.
The Fire and Disaster Headquarters announced on the 12th that from January to February next year, they will intensively inspect a total of 178 fire extinguisher manufacturers, importers, and sellers in the province for acts such as selling or displaying fire extinguishers without type approval, and selling products through false or exaggerated advertising despite unproven extinguishing performance against lithium-ion battery or electric vehicle battery fires.
The Fire and Disaster Headquarters will also crack down on products that are not technically fire extinguishers by name, such as extinguishing agents, but are sold in the form of fire extinguishers.
Under the current "Act on the Installation and Management of Firefighting Facilities," products must receive type approval and product inspection from the Korea Fire Industry Technology Institute (KFI) and bear a passing mark to be distributed.
Before this crackdown, the Fire and Disaster Headquarters will conduct focused guidance on the distribution of such unapproved fire extinguishers until the end of this month.
Jo Sun-ho, head of the Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters, said, "As the distribution of unapproved fire extinguishers has increased by exploiting social interest in lithium battery and electric vehicle fires, we are pushing for a crackdown to establish a sound distribution order in the fire extinguisher market," and urged, "Please actively cooperate so that you do not suffer disadvantages from selling products that have not received type approval or whose extinguishing performance has not been verified."
