"Japan Seems to Be Trying to Rebuild Relations with Trump"
Abe Akie, the wife of the late former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, is reportedly coordinating a visit to the United States as early as this weekend to meet with President-elect Donald Trump.
Private broadcaster Fuji News Network (FNN) reported that Akie is considering traveling to Florida over the weekend to meet with President-elect Trump. FNN added that while leaders from various countries are seeking meetings with President-elect Trump, Japan also appears to have the intention of rebuilding relations with him.
Former Prime Minister Abe met with President-elect Trump before his inauguration after Trump won the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and they built a relationship from that meeting. When Abe announced his resignation in 2020, President-elect Trump called to express his regret over the departure of his "closest friend, Prime Minister Abe." Melania Trump, the wife of President-elect Trump, also spoke separately with Akie at that time.
The Japanese government attempted to arrange an early meeting between Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and President-elect Trump, but it fell through. It was reported that President-elect Trump's side conveyed to Japan that a meeting before the inauguration would be difficult.
