Osan-si, Successive Design Idea Competitions for Public Architecture

'Ossancheon Starlight Bridge' and 'Miniature Village Family Library'
Attract Attention with Initial Idea Contest Instead of Design Competition Method

Osan City in Gyeonggi Province is drawing attention by consecutively holding idea contests to introduce differentiated designs in public architecture. The intention is to move away from the conventional professional 'design competitions' and seek 'design ideas' at the initial stage.

Osan-si, Successive Design Idea Competitions for Public Architecture

According to Osan City on the 11th, the city recently held design idea contests for the construction of the 'Osancheon Starlight Bridge' and the 'Family Library in Miniature Village.' The contests aimed to discover buildings that embody creative and future-oriented visions.

The 'Osancheon Starlight Bridge' is a bridge-type structure spanning Osancheon. It connects the old downtown area with the new towns of Segyo 2 and 3 districts. The city plans to establish restaurants, cafes, flea markets, and observatories there to make it a landmark of the city. A total of 34 entries were submitted to the contest. The city will select the best design through a proposal review committee and utilize it for the construction of the building.

The 'Miniature Village Family Library' is a library to be built for residents of Sinjang 1 and 2-dong, planned to be constructed on vacant land within the Miniature Village in Naesammi-dong. The city recently conducted an internal review of the submissions received through the contest and selected 16 entries in the first round. The first round of evaluation was based on five criteria: understanding of the library building and contest theme, originality and creativity of the design, harmony with the surrounding area, feasibility of the design, and aesthetic completeness of the design. The city plans to hold a second round of evaluation by a separate review committee to finalize the winning entry.

Lee Gwon-jae, mayor of Osan City, said, "Through this contest, we will discover creative and citizen-friendly designs."
