Jeongeup-si Selected as an 'Excellent Institution' in the Forest Management Project Led by Jeonbuk Province

Evaluation of Three Projects Including Forest Plantation Management and Young Tree Care

Jeongeup City announced on the 11th that it was selected as an excellent institution for two consecutive years in the ‘Forest Management Project Evaluation’ hosted by the Jeonbuk Special Autonomous Province.

This evaluation, conducted from October 28 to 31, aimed to discover excellent cases of forest management, induce competition among cities and counties, and improve quality. It included three projects as evaluation targets: forest plantation management, young tree care, and large tree care.

‘Forest plantation management’ is a project that helps the growth of planted trees by removing vines and weeds for three years after planting, and ‘young tree care’ is a project that removes diseased trees and harmful species for 5 to 10 years after planting.

‘Large tree care’ refers to a project that promotes the growth of superior trees through thinning and pruning of trees that have passed 15 years after planting.

To successfully carry out this project, the city conducted systematic project management through a ‘Forest Management Project Administration Agency’ contract with the Jeongeup Forestry Cooperative.

Through this, the city successfully completed a total of 887 hectares of projects, including 650 hectares of forest plantation management, 100 hectares of young tree care, 40 hectares of large tree care, 40 hectares of forest product collection, 40 hectares of forest fire prevention forest management, and 17 hectares of public forest care.

In this evaluation, the city received high scores in detailed management such as timely mowing and good forest product collection, and was selected as an excellent institution, receiving a prize of 2 million won. Of this, 1 million won will be donated as a scholarship fund for nurturing local talent.

Mayor Lee Hak-su said, “The city will expand the economic and social functions of forests by fostering economic forests to increase the income of forestry workers and expanding carbon sinks,” and added, “We will continue to contribute to the local community and environment through sustainable forest management.”
