Provincial Office of Education Distributes 2024 Middle School Autonomous Time Best Practices Collection
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Tae-hee) will hold the '2024 School Autonomous Time Operation Best Practices Regional Sharing Event' to apply and establish autonomous school curricula in the field. This event will be held on the 11th (Northern Office) and the 18th (Southern Office), respectively. It will be conducted simultaneously with on-site participation and live streaming on YouTube Gyeonggi Teacher On TV (TV, secondary), and will be operated in two parts.

The first part will feature sharing of best practices in operating school autonomous time from seven schools. Each school will present ▲ cases linked with the school autonomous curriculum ▲ cases linked with theme selection in the free semester system ▲ cases related to character and environmental themes, among others.
The second part will include a Q&A session on-site with the schools sharing their cases, discussing difficulties in establishing subjects during school autonomous time and support measures.
In the 2022 revised middle school curriculum, all middle schools introduce and operate school autonomous time. As a result of the three-year curriculum organization for middle school entrants in the 2025 academic year, a total of about 950 subjects are operated using school autonomous time. Depending on the operation status in the 2025 academic year, the number of subjects utilizing school autonomous time is expected to expand further in the future.
This event has expanded the sharing of best practices not only to middle schools within the province but also to institutions under the provincial office of education and middle schools affiliated with other city and provincial offices of education.
Kim Yoon-gi, Director of the Curriculum Policy Division at the Provincial Office of Education, said, “We will support the operation of a richer curriculum by linking school autonomous time in the 2022 revised middle school curriculum with the free semester and school autonomous curriculum through this sharing of cases.”
Meanwhile, the Provincial Office of Education plans to make multifaceted efforts to operate distinctive school curricula and revitalize regional curricula through school autonomous time, including ▲ producing and distributing a 2024 middle school school autonomous time operation casebook ▲ conducting training to strengthen subject curriculum capabilities for operating school autonomous time subjects.
