Scientific Talent as Solo Global Entrepreneurs... Yeongdeungpo-gu Hosts Taiwan TSMC Science Camp Students listening to an explanation of the semiconductor process at the Taiwan TSMC Innovation Museum

The Yeongdeungpo-gu Future Education Foundation announced that it conducted the ‘Global Innovation Science Camp,’ which involved visits to Taiwan's TSMC Innovation Museum and the Taiwan National Space Center (TASA), to help local youth grow into global talents leading the next generation of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

The ‘Global Innovation Science Camp’ is part of the Yeongdeungpo-type scholarship program operated by the Yeongdeungpo-gu Future Education Foundation. It is a new form of scholarship program that fosters interest and dreams in science through visits to overseas scientific institutions and space research centers. Moving away from cash-centered benevolent scholarships, it provides scientifically minded and inquisitive youth with opportunities to directly experience advanced overseas science and technology and culture.

This camp is the second journey following the visit to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) last July.

The main reason for organizing such a program is to offer students valuable experiences that broaden their horizons and help them develop life directions and perspectives. In the upcoming 4th Industrial Revolution era, since 'scientific talent is equivalent to a one-person global enterprise,' future education and talent development to support jobs in advanced industries are considered more important than ever.

The camp targeted 30 science hopefuls who were finally selected through recommendations from 12 local middle schools and document and interview screenings. From November 20 to 23, over 3 nights and 4 days, they traveled to Taiwan. They expanded their global scientific talent perspectives and potential by visiting the TSMC Innovation Museum, the Taiwan National Space Center (TASA), and the National Taiwan Science Education Center.

First, the students explored semiconductor production and development history and the principles of semiconductor chips through expert docent explanations and various visual and auditory exhibits at the TSMC Innovation Museum.

Next, at the Taiwan National Space Center (TASA), they enhanced their understanding of space science and aerospace technology by touring the satellite control center and rocket models with staff explanations.

Additionally, at the National Taiwan Science Education Center, the National Museum of Natural Science, and the National Museum of Marine Science and Technology, the students chose exhibits they wanted to see and explored them. Through the ‘One Choice’ activity, where they shared their findings with friends, they experienced the joy of researching and discovering as prospective scientists.

Park ○○, a second-year student at Yanghwa Middle School who participated in the camp, said, “The exhibits at the TSMC Innovation Museum were things I couldn’t see in textbooks, so my heart raced every time I saw them, and I think it will greatly help me move toward my dream.”

Lee ○○, a second-year student at Yeongwon Middle School, shared, “Thanks to this camp, where I was exposed to various fields such as marine science, aerospace, natural science, and semiconductors without focusing on a specific area, my dream has grown even bigger.”

A representative of the Yeongdeungpo-gu Future Education Foundation stated, “To nurture future scientific talents who will lead the 4th Industrial Revolution era and allow their creativity and imagination to flourish, the national and local governments must support the science education ecosystem. We will actively support students to visit science museums as playgrounds anytime and help produce world-class robotic engineers like Dennis Hong,” they said.
