Ulsan Office of Education Selects 35 Excellent Cases for ‘Near-Miss Accident’ Prevention

Okdong Elementary School Wins Grand Prize for 'Improvement Case of Leftover Food Bin Transport Route'

Excellent Casebook Including First Half Cases Produced and Distributed to Schools

The Ulsan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Cheon Chang-su) held a contest for ‘Second Half Near Miss Accident Prevention Cases’ and selected 35 outstanding cases.

The grand prize was awarded to Okdong Elementary School for their improvement of the food waste bin transport route in the cafeteria. Their efforts to prevent fall accidents and musculoskeletal disorders that could occur during the transport of food waste bins were highly praised.

The excellence awards went to Yaeum Elementary School for the safe finishing of steam pipes in the cafeteria and Eonyang Elementary School for the additional installation of safety railings on the rooftop. Yaeum Elementary reduced burn risks by using colored finishing materials on exposed steam pipe sections, while Eonyang Elementary enhanced safety by adding safety railings to the rooftop barriers.

Other selected cases included the installation of LED light panels in streetlight blind spots, anti-slip measures on stairs, attachment of reflective tape on fence supports, and installation of ladder safety devices (outriggers).

The Ulsan Office of Education, aiming to identify and improve potential accident risk factors at schools and institutions, received 55 cases in the contest held from September 5 to 30, following the first half of the year.

A ‘Near Miss Accident’ refers to an incident where an accident almost occurred due to worker negligence or equipment defects on site, but no direct human or material damage happened.

The Ulsan Office of Education plans to distribute a collection of excellent cases, including the 25 outstanding cases from the first half and the newly selected ones, to schools and institutions for use as educational materials.

An official from the Ulsan Office of Education stated, “We will strive even harder to establish a safety culture where all members can identify and improve hazardous and risky factors themselves, so that they can focus on their work in a safe environment.”
