Corporate OLED Shipment Survey... SamsungD Car OLED Shipments Increase from 100,000 to 540,000 Units
Samsung Display's third-quarter shipments of automotive organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels increased more than fivefold compared to the beginning of the year. Market research firm UBI Research announced on the 10th that Samsung Display's automotive OLED panel shipments rose from 100,000 units in the first quarter to 540,000 units in the third quarter. On the same day, UBI Research released the results of its recently published 'Medium-to-Large OLED Display Market Track' report.
According to UBI Research, Samsung Display's third-quarter shipments of medium-to-large OLED panels totaled 4.56 million units, similar to 4.34 million units in the second quarter. The decrease in tablet PC panel shipments was offset by an increase in automotive OLED panel shipments. Tablet PC panel shipments declined by 240,000 units from 1.77 million units in the second quarter to 1.53 million units in the third quarter, while automotive panel shipments increased by 320,000 units from 220,000 units to 540,000 units.
Junho Kim, an analyst at UBI Research, explained, "Although (Apple) iPad Pro OLED sales were sluggish, leading to a decrease in Samsung Display's tablet PC OLED panel shipments, shipments increased in other applications."
According to UBI Research, automotive panel shipments accounted for 11.8% of Samsung Display's medium-to-large OLED panel shipments in the third quarter. The share of automotive panels grew from 3.5% (100,000 units) in the first quarter to 5.1% (220,000 units) in the second quarter and 11.8% (540,000 units) in the third quarter.
UBI Research expects Samsung Display's medium-to-large OLED panel shipments, including automotive and tablet PC panels, to increase further from the end of next year.
Analyst Kim stated, "With Samsung Display advancing the mass production timing of its 8.6-generation line to the end of next year, market expansion will accelerate. Not only tablet PC and automotive OLEDs but also the laptop and monitor markets are expected to grow rapidly alongside Apple's market entry."
